Dental Tips and Pointers from Dr. Kenneth Ostrega

Tips for Seniors

The health of your teeth as you get older greatly depends on how you care for them. Seniors must continue to practice good oral hygiene to protect their teeth and gums against disease and discomfort. Dr. Kenneth Ostrega and our staff have some helpful tips to better care for your teeth and dentures at home:

  • Brush and floss twice a day
  • Use fluoride toothpaste
  • Avoid cigarettes, chewing tobacco and alcohol as much as possible
  • Maintain a well-balanced diet and avoid candy
  • Clean your dentures with liquid hand soap over a basin of water (to avoid breaking them if dropped)
  • If you are having trouble keeping your arm or hand firm while brushing, you can adapt your toothbrush handle with a tennis ball or bicycle handle grip for better control. You can also invest in an electric toothbrush

It is crucial for you to visit our office for a check-up at least every six months – we’ll let you know if you should visit us more frequently depending on the overall health of your teeth.
